The meaning of the title ‘Virgin Priest’

“ Virgin Priest is a title of Mary which seem to confirm all the others . . . a singular title, strange, accorded only to Mary among all women. It is the royalty of the priesthood. Mary is priest. She has received the priestly anointing by the Holy Spirit. She has given birth to the victim and to the eternal Priest. She has offered him to God for the salvation of the world . . . We are going to try to meditate on how Mary is truly the source of the Christian priesthood, how she was filled with it. She fills all the ministries in the Church with it every day.” Orateurs Sacrés, Paris 1866, vol. 86, p. 227.

Mary is High Priest anointed by the Holy Spirit

“ In the first creation, woman was drawn from man. In the second, it will be man, the heavenly man, who will be drawn from the woman, but from a very extraordinary woman: that is a woman-highpriest. In order to be highpriest one needs to be ordained, one needs to produce a victim, to consecrate it, to offer it. One needs to teach and pray. One needs to communicate the priesthood. One needs to give birth to souls and to recreate them. Well, all these conditions are united in Mary. She has been anointed and ordained by the Holy Spirit himself . . .
O Mary, the Son of God is the victim which produces your priesthood . . . You will consecrate that priesthood, oh Virgin, covering it with your kisses and pronouncing over it the words of praise and blessing . . . ”
Orateurs Sacrés, Paris 1866, vol. 86, p. 228.
