Statement on the Ordination of Catholic Women

International Movement, We Are Church

5 July 2002

The Coordination Team of the International We Are Church Movement (IMWAC) congratulates the seven women who were ordained to the Catholic priesthood on June 29, 2002:

Christine Mayr-Lumetzberger
Sr. Adelinde Roitinger
Pia Brunner
Angela White
Dr. Ida Raming
Dr. Iris Mueller
Dr. Gisela Forster

They have made an important step for the advancement of women in our church. Their ordination, like that of Ludmila Javarová in 1970 and Mary Ramerman in 2001, challenges our church community worldwide to accept women as the equals of men in all dimensions of church life.

But, as the seven women themselves said on June 29th, "this is just the beginning." Much work for reform, renewal and equality remains to be done. And so, we, the Coordination Team of IMWAC pledge that we will pray and work as never before so that what these women have done is a fruitful step toward the general and official acceptance of women and priests and bishops in our church.

Let us pray and cooperate with God's Spirit so that the next ordination of women does no longer need to be contra legem (against canon law).
